Pedestrians’ Injury Severity in Traffic Accidents in Spain: A Pedestrian Actions Approach

Road traffic accidents are currently between the seventh and tenth leading cause of death in world, with approximately 1.35 million people killed per year. Despite extensive efforts by governments, according to World Health Organization, road still far too many deaths, especially among pedestrians, cyclists two-wheel motor vehicle riders, who together account for almost 50% fatalities. In particular, Spain had 410,974 2016 2019, involving 722,516 vehicles 61,177 pedestrians varying degrees injury. This study uses Bayesian network method understand how pedestrians’ responsibility actions at time accident affect injury suffered said pedestrian, also considering variables infrastructure site. The results confirm that linked unsafe behavior their accidents, increase risk suffering serious or fatal injuries during an accident; example, if a pedestrian is distracted this increases his/her probability severe (27.86%) respect not being (20.73%). Conditions related high-speed areas, areas no poor lighting, lacking sidewalks, record injury, as case age group over 60 years age.
